How to use the value proposition canvas to map customer jobs, pains and gains against your product, with a founder-ready walkthrough.
This canvas illustrates how to align customer needs with product offerings to achieve product-market fit. It helps founders understand customer drivers, fears, and desired outcomes to build a successful value proposition.
Value Proposition Canvas: Guide to Product-Market Fit is a diagram in the strategy section of the StartupFundraising visual library, covering value proposition, product market fit, customer needs, product development, business strategy, startup. Founders use it inside pitch decks, board updates and investor follow-ups; it is free to download and adapt to your own numbers.
The canvas has two halves that must mirror each other. On the right sits the customer profile: the jobs your customer is trying to get done, the pains that get in the way — cost, risk, wasted time, bad outcomes — and the gains they would count as a win. On the left sits the value map: your products and services, the pain relievers that remove specific frictions, and the gain creators that produce the outcomes the customer named. Product-market fit is the moment the two halves line up item for item.
Start on the right, and start with evidence rather than assumption. Write jobs as the customer would say them, not as your feature list implies. Rank pains by intensity and gains by whether the customer would pay for them; a canvas where everything is equally important tells you nothing. Only then move left, and draw a line from each pain reliever to the exact pain it removes. Anything on the left with no line is a feature you built for yourself. Anything on the right with no line is either a gap in the product or a customer you are not actually serving.
Most seed decks assert product-market fit; a filled canvas shows the reasoning behind the assertion. It makes the target customer specific, it forces you to name which pain you are the best answer to, and it exposes where your product is still a nice-to-have. Founders typically use the output as the source material for the problem and solution slides, then keep it as an internal document that gets revised each time customer interviews contradict it. Treat it as a hypothesis you are trying to break, not a diagram you complete once.
