How to raise venture capital for neurotech and brain-computer interface startups: FDA pathway, capital intensity.
Neurotech went from fringe to fundable after Neuralink's first human implants and Synchron's expanded FDA trials. But it's still one of the most capital-intensive, regulation-heavy categories in venture. Founders need to underwrite a 10-year path to revenue and match with investors who can hold that long.
Neuralink's PRIME trial expansion, Synchron's Stentrode commercial pathway, and Precision Neuroscience's Layer 7 approval milestone shifted BCI from science project to investable category. Non-invasive players (Neurable, Cognixion, Kernel) are also raising again after the 2022-2023 reset.
At the same time, ARPA-H's Health Innovation Programs and expanded NIH BRAIN Initiative funding created a non-dilutive layer that didn't exist five years ago.
Pre-seed to seed: $2-8M from Founders Fund, Lux, angel groups (Village Global, Alumni Ventures). Series A: $20-60M from DCVC, Khosla, GV. Series B+: $80-200M from ARCH, Bessemer, sovereign funds (Mubadala, PIF). Strategic corporates typically enter at Series B and often co-invest with a lead VC.
First-in-human data or credible predicate device pathway. A regulatory strategy signed off by an ex-FDA advisor. IP position defensible against Neuralink and Synchron. A clinical advisory board with named neurosurgeons at top-3 academic centers.
Underestimating the FDA timeline. Raising from generalists who panic at trial delays. Overweighting consumer/wellness use cases before medical validation. Skipping the DARPA/NIH non-dilutive layer and burning equity for preclinical work.
