The seed round is where a startup raises enough capital to build out an early team and reach the milestones a Series A investor will underwrite. Check sizes have crept up over the past decade — a modern seed is often $2M–$5M, sometimes larger.
Seed rounds may be priced or on SAFEs. Typical dilution to investors is 15–25% at a priced seed. Investors look for early traction signal, a working product, and a founder who can articulate a credible path to $1M+ ARR within 18 months.
