Field AI founder Ali Agha on raising millions for a capital-intensive robotics business: investor pitch, milestones, and funding strategy.
Dr. Ali Agha, with nearly two decades of experience in AI and autonomy algorithms, drives FieldAI’s strategic vision and product development. His background includes leading high-profile autonomy projects at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, such as the DARPA Subterranean Challenge, the DARPA RACER, and Mars exploration initiatives, as well as conducting research at MIT and Qualcomm.
Well, for you guys, Ali, I mean, you guys have raised 500 million, you know, which is uh a fair amount of money. Um obviously, a business like Field AI, you know, requires capital, you know, it could be capital intensive. Um how has been the journey of raising money, you know, and going through the motions and through the different cycles, too? >> We um in general, we are actually again thanks to the architecture, pretty lean in the sense that we learn with less level of of of data. We um and because we have deployed, we have the the revenues flowing in. Um in general, we are uh we are in a in a very robust shape there. Um even from our last round, you know, majority of it is still, you know, available resource-wise for us. Um so so we are pretty lean there. At the same time, given um the the the request and accelerated uh sort of um interest in the physical AI world and people
seeing what robots can do, how fast they deliver ROI to them, uh we're getting a lot of demand. We have expanded a lot of our customers. So, um so that as a result of that, fundraising has always been a great thing for us to help accelerating deployment of these solutions, help accelerating uh you know, penetration into market, and accelerating our flight data flywheel and improving the model uh uh We have been very fortunate. I think in the last few rounds, it has been mostly inbound interest. And um you know, from our very early days that they heard from uh sort of um our our early partners and customers. And um all the way to the the later stage raises.
