Toivo Annus was a founding partner of Ambient Sound Investments (ASI), a private asset management firm and single-family office established in 2003 by four Skype co-founders to hold their minority stake in the company. Following Skype’s sale to eBay for $2.6 billion in 2005, ASI expanded to fund more than 50 early-stage ventures worldwide, with Annus personally making 44 investments as an angel investor. The firm typically targets pre-seed and seed stages across sectors including enterprise applications, fintech, and wireless networking, with a geographic focus on Estonia, India, Singapore, and Taiwan. While ASI’s average round investment is reported at $4.86 million, Annus’s individual checks vary, such as a €200,000 ($300,000) investment for a 14% stake in AirDio Wireless. Notable portfolio companies include Skype, Hopscotch, Milaap, and Pomelo Fashion, where Annus participated in Pomelo’s $52 million Series C round in 2019. Annus, who died unexpectedly from a stroke on July 12, 2020, is primarily remembered for his foundational role in Skype and ASI rather than for public writing or a distinctive published investment philosophy
