ARR, NRR, gross retention, CAC payback, magic number, LTV/CAC, gross margin, quick ratio, ACV, and pipeline coverage.
Investors ask for the same ten metrics in every SaaS diligence conversation. Founders who present them proactively — with definitions and cohort math — save weeks of back-and-forth.
Annualized recurring revenue at period end. Growth rate measured year-over-year, not annualized from a good quarter. Series A benchmark: $1-3M ARR growing 3x+ annually. Series B: $5-15M ARR growing 2-3x.
Revenue from existing cohort a year later, including expansion, minus churn and downgrades. 100% = flat. 110%+ = healthy. 120%+ = elite. Best-in-class SaaS at Series B has NRR above 120%.
Revenue retention excluding expansion. Isolates churn and downgrade. Under 85% at Series B is a red flag. Under 70% signals product-market fit issues that a fundraise won't solve.
Months to recover fully-loaded customer acquisition cost from gross margin. Under 12 months is efficient. 12-18 is healthy for enterprise. Over 24 months rarely gets funded at Series B without a compelling reason.
Net new ARR in a quarter divided by S&M spend in the prior quarter. Above 0.7 = healthy sales efficiency. Above 1.0 = accelerate spend. Below 0.5 = sales machine isn't working yet.
Lifetime value divided by CAC. Rule of thumb: above 3x. Below 3x usually means either CAC is too high or retention is too weak. Watch the components separately — the ratio can hide problems.
Revenue minus cost of revenue (hosting, third-party fees, customer success). SaaS benchmark: 70-80%. Under 60% signals a services or infrastructure-heavy model that will get valued closer to a services business.
(New ARR + expansion ARR) divided by (churn + downgrade ARR) in the same period. Above 4 is strong. Below 2 means expansion isn't outpacing losses.
Average contract value — the shape of your business. Pipeline coverage — usually 3-4x of the quarter's target — signals whether the next quarter is defensible or hopeful.
