After serving in that capacity for several years, he attended Campbell University on an ROTC scholarship, graduating summa cum laude and receiving his commission as an Army officer. His education continued at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine where he received his medical degree with Highest Honors. He then re-entered active military service and completed an orthopedic surgery residency through Madigan Army Medical Center and the University of Washington. The remainder of his military service was spent as a military orthopedic trauma surgeon, including tours in Afghanistan and three years at Landstuhl Medical Center in Germany.
