Clifford T. Smith was appointed Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer of Cleveland-Cliffs Inc. on January 1, 2019. Cleveland-Cliffs, founded in 1847, is the largest and oldest independent iron ore mining company in the United States, supplying iron ore pellets to the North American steel industry. Smith joined Cleveland-Cliffs in 2003 and has held numerous executive and senior leadership positions within the company, including Executive Vice President, Business Development, and Executive Vice President, Seaborne Iron Ore, overseeing operations in Australia and Canada. Prior to Cleveland-Cliffs, he held mine management positions with Asarco and South Peru Copper Corporation. He holds a BSc in mining engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology.
