LeRoy Carlson founded Telephone and Data Systems (TDS) in 1969, initially comprised of ten small, rural telephone companies. He was CEO of TDS until 1986 and chairman until 2002. Carlson also founded TDS subsidiary United States Cellular Corporation in 1983 and remained a director of U.S. Cellular.
